A smart radiator valve is the small round head that replaces the white knob on your radiator. Bad news: skip the check and you may end up with a head that will not clip on — and a return to organise.

How to identify your connection in 2 minutes

  • Look at the current head. If you see a plastic knob numbered 1 to 5, it is a thermostatic head: unscrew it by hand (or remove the locking pin/screw) to expose the valve body.
  • Measure the thread with a ruler: the most common standard is M30 x 1.5 (30 mm outside diameter, 1.5 mm pitch). Older Danfoss « RA » heads use a click-on system with no thread: look for the small sprung metal catch on the body.

What you need

  • The smart thermostatic head (with its adapters and mounting key)
  • Two AA batteries (or AAA depending on the model) — some heads ship with them
  • A microfibre cloth
  • Optionally slip-joint pliers to free a stubborn head (never to tighten the adapter)
  • A smartphone with the brand’s app, on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network

You do not need to drain the circuit or switch off the heating system’s main supply. Simply turn the heating off (summer mode on the boiler, or thermostat off) and wait for the radiator to cool: working cold avoids burns and, more importantly, lets the valve move freely.

Step-by-step installation (10 to 20 minutes per radiator)

Step 1: remove the old head

A manual head unscrews counter-clockwise. Some are locked by a small screw (often 2 mm, Allen key) or a pin to push in. On a Danfoss RA head, pull the release ring upwards while turning. Step 2: check that the valve pin moves

Two golden rules: never mount the head upside down if the manufacturer forbids it (vertical, display-up mounting is tolerated by most models — check yours), and leave clearance around the unit so the temperature sensor can breathe. A head buried behind a thick curtain or furniture measures the curtain, not the room.

Step 5: insert the batteries and pair

Open the compartment (usually at the back or under a cap), insert the batteries and launch the app. The head appears in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi discovery: follow the wizard, which usually asks you to scan the QR code printed in the box or on the head. Accept the firmware update if offered — it often fixes scheduling bugs — then wait for the download to finish.

Step 6: run the calibration (valve stroke)

On first start, the head drives the valve pin from stop to stop to learn its stroke. Calibration takes 5 to 10 minutes: do not touch anything during that time. Turn on open-window detection and holiday mode. If the brand offers it, enable geolocation so the heating drops when everyone leaves the flat.

Step 8: test the temperature rise

Switch the heating back on and check that each radiator warms up when its set point is above the room temperature. A radiator that stays cold while the head shows « open » (flame or valve percentage): seized valve or air in the circuit.
