September is when indoor air becomes everyone’s topic: ragweed pollen is peaking, schools reopen with their CO2 monitors, and the first cool nights make you want to keep the windows shut. Yet we spend about 85% of our time indoors, breathing air that the French environment agency ADEME estimates to be 5 to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. An air purifier won’t replace ventilation or a CO2 sensor — but the right one will pull down fine particles and allergens in the rooms where you sleep and work. Between 3 August and 6 September 2026, we placed six models, from €90 to €550, in a 72 m² flat in Lyon and checked their claims against an independent particle counter. Here is what the test actually showed.

Who needs a smart air purifier — and why now?

An air purifier answers three specific situations. The first is allergies: grass pollen in spring, ragweed in late summer, dust mites all year round. The second is nearby pollution: a flat on a busy avenue, a kitchen opening onto the living room, a neighbour who smokes on the balcony. The third is vaguer — comfort: less dust on the furniture, air that feels less stale when you wake up in a room that stayed shut all night.

The “smart” part changes one precise thing: the sensor. A purifier without a sensor runs constantly, wasting power and filter life. A model with a sensor measures particles, adapts its speed, and pings you when the air degrades — dinner smoke, or an outdoor pollution spike picked up by your indoor air quality monitor. It is also the only way to check the machine actually works: you watch the PM2.5 curve, not the colour of an LED.

What a purifier does — and what it will never do

A purifier filters what floats in the air: fine particles PM2.5 and PM10, pollen, dust mites, pet dander, dust and — depending on the filter — volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odours. It does nothing about CO2: if the room feels stuffy, the only fix is to open a window. It is not a smoke detector, and it won’t treat humidity either. The distinction sounds obvious, yet it explains most disappointments: a purifier is not a magic health device, it is a motorised filter with a sensor and an app.

What the studies say — and what it is worth in 2026

The WHO air quality guidelines published on 22 September 2021 remain the reference: they recommend staying below 5 µg/m³ of PM2.5 on an annual average and 15 µg/m³ over 24 hours — levels that European city centres regularly exceed. On measurable benefit, most of the literature concerns allergy: a meta-analysis from the University of Cincinnati (2018) concludes that HEPA filtration clearly reduces allergic rhinitis symptoms. How to choose: the 6 criteria that actually matter

After five weeks of measurements, these are the only figures that count at purchase time. Everything else — design, ambient light, number of speeds — only matters if these six points hold up.

1. CADR and room size: the one number that never lies

CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, AHAM standard) tells you how much air the machine filters per hour. Simple rule: aim for at least 200 m³/h for a 15 m² bedroom, 300 m³/h for a 30 m² living room. Halve the advertised coverage if you want a real effect on particles: a unit rated “for 60 m²” will do a proper job in 30 m² — which is already plenty. Every model in the table publishes its CADR — walk away from those that don’t.

2. The filter: HEPA H13 and activated carbon, in that order

HEPA H13 (EN 1822 standard) captures 99.95% of particles at 0.3 µm — the consensus benchmark. Activated carbon traps VOCs and odours: essential if you cook a lot or live in a city. Be wary of “ionisers” and “ozone purifiers”: ozone is a pollutant in its own right, and health agencies advise against it indoors. We kept none of those in this test.

3. Sensor and auto mode: the real “smart” difference

A laser PM2.5 sensor with auto mode runs the machine at the right speed at the right time. On the Philips and the Levoit, ramping to maximum starts within seconds when you cook; on sensor-less models you do everything by hand and end up leaving them running permanently. Also check that the displayed value is a real measurement, not a coloured estimate: good models show the concentration in µg/m³.

4. Night-mode noise: the criterion that keeps the machine alive

A purifier that is too loud ends up switched off in a cupboard — the #1 observation from everyone around us. In night mode, aim for under 35 dB (measured at 1 m), with the display turning off: the Dyson drops to a breath, the Xiaomi 4 Lite fades into the background. Beware of night modes that disable the sensor — then the machine no longer knows when to speed up.

5. Filter running costs: the hidden price, usually forgotten

Budget €30 to €90 per filter, replaced every 6 to 12 months depending on use. Over three years, filters often cost more than the entry-level machines themselves. Check that replacement filters are still sold in Europe and at what price — some brands sell the unit cheap and claw back the margin on consumables. The Levoit and the Xiaomi stay under €45 a year; the Dyson asks for nearly twice that.

6. App and ecosystem: useful, not gimmicky

The app must show the particle curve, allow a weekly schedule and send notifications. Alexa and Google Home cover basic scenarios; as of this writing, no mainstream purifier runs on Matter, and that is not blocking — Wi-Fi plus the app does the job. What you should refuse are models that paywall the history behind a subscription: a growing trap. All four brands in this test give you everything for free.

Philips Series 3000i AC2887/10 — the most balanced of the test

The 3000i ticks every box without missing one. Its 333 m³/h CADR cleans a 35 m² living room in about twenty minutes — measured, not claimed: in our lounge, PM2.5 dropped from 38 to 9 µg/m³ in 24 minutes after a cooking test. The AeraSense sensor shows the real concentration in µg/m³, auto mode reacts quickly, and the AirMatters app keeps a clean history with no subscription, plus Alexa and Google Home for scenarios. The build is tidy, the touch controls discreet, and night mode drops to a barely audible level (20.6 dB claimed — confirmed by ear). The Dyson impresses first with what it measures: particles, VOCs, nitrogen dioxide and temperature, with an LCD showing pollution in real time and an airflow that stirs the whole room. In real conditions it was the fastest of the test at bringing particles back down after a spike — no surprise, it is the most powerful. The HEPA + activated carbon filter sits in a sealed assembly, which avoids blowing back what you just captured when changing it — a detail the others don’t bother with. The “Autoreact” mode adjusts power continuously, and the Dyson Link app stays sober. What annoys: the price, the noise at medium speed (clearly audible), and filters at nearly €90 a year. And let’s be honest: at €550 you would expect decent castors — the ones supplied are hard plastic and scratch the parquet. If the budget stretches, this is the best purifier of the test; otherwise the Philips does 90% of the job for half the money.

In our measurements it took 26 minutes to bring PM2.5 from 40 to 10 µg/m³ in the living room — barely slower than the Philips. Its strength is the cost of ownership: replacement filters cost around €35 and swap in thirty seconds from underneath. Its limits: the claimed coverage (46 m²) is optimistic for real use — count on 25 effective m² —, the plastic feels cheap, and the VeSync app pushes its own ads for other devices. For a bedroom or a small living room, this is the most sensible buy on the market.

Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 — the best equipped under €150

The Xiaomi 4 is the champion of features-per-euro. OLED display (PM2.5, temperature, humidity), reliable laser sensor, Mi Home app — the richest of the test, with automations that go beyond simple on/off: pair it with an opening sensor to start purifying when you close the windows, or schedule it room by room. Alexa and Google are on board. The HEPA H13 filtration holds up, and night mode stays discreet. Two flaws: the Mi Home app is intrusive (account required, product catalogue every time you open it) and long-term history goes through a cloud in China — a legitimate concern if you care about data. At €150, it is the best choice if you accept the Xiaomi ecosystem.

Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Lite — the best cheap bedroom pick

For a child’s bedroom or any room under 20 m², the 4 Lite is more than enough — at €89.99. Same PM2.5 laser sensor, same Mi Home app, HEPA H13 filtration; only the power and the big brother’s OLED screen are missing (replaced by a sober LED display). In night mode it fades into the background and the display switches off. On our readings it brought a 14 m² bedroom from 28 to 8 µg/m³ of PM2.5 in 35 minutes. Its limits: the lower CADR means longer run times, and the filter (≈ €25) needs swapping every 6 months in heavy use. For a first purchase or a small room, it is the right reflex — provided you accept the Mi Home ecosystem.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Gen1 — the alternative that heats

A special mention for the Hot+Cool Gen1 (€449.99): it adds app-controlled heating and a fan for summer. With the season ahead, it is tempting — we ran it in an 18 m² office, and it held 21 °C without effort. But the heating output is that of a plug-in convector (2000 W), not a main radiator, and the noise in heating mode is noticeable. If you want one device to purify and heat a study or a bedroom, it defends itself; otherwise the money is better spent on the Philips 3000i plus a proper heater. Where to place your purifier and how to use it

Placement matters almost as much as the model. Put the unit at least 30 cm from walls and furniture, never behind a curtain or under a table: it needs to breathe to move air. In a bedroom, put it on the bed side at breathing height, but not pressed against the headboard. Avoid the “decorative corner” where it captures nothing — the mistake you see in every interior photo.

Two usage rules make more difference than the model choice. First, leave it in auto mode permanently in the main room: a purifier that only runs “when you remember” is useless. Is a smart air purifier actually effective?

Yes — on particles and allergens, provided you respect the real coverage (half the advertised figure) and leave it running continuously. In our measurements, all six models cut PM2.5 by 60 to 80% within an hour in a closed room. It does nothing for CO2 or humidity: ventilating remains essential.

Purifier or air quality monitor: which comes first?

The monitor. For two weeks it will tell you whether your air is actually bad, when (cooking, night, outdoor spike) and in which room. A purifier bought blind may treat a problem you don’t have. Our test of indoor air quality monitors covers both cases: measure first, purify second.

What coverage for what CADR?

Allow at least 200 m³/h CADR for 15 m², 300 m³/h for 30 m². When in doubt, take the model above: an oversized purifier runs more often at low speed, so it is quieter and lasts longer. A unit that is too small runs flat out permanently and wears out fast.

HEPA H13 or activated carbon: which should I choose?

Both, in that order of importance: HEPA H13 traps particles (pollen, dust mites, PM2.5), activated carbon absorbs odours and VOCs. If you cook a lot or live in a city, the carbon makes the difference; otherwise a good HEPA alone is enough. Avoid “washable” filters: a washed filter loses performance — that is marketing.

Should I wait for a Matter-compatible purifier?
